  2.     This kind of computational process, suggested by Helmholtz
  3. as an explanation of constancy,
  4. is beyond conscious knowledge
  5. or control and occurs very 
  6. quickly. Helmholtz referred to 
  7. it as unconscious inference. It 
  8. depends upon sensory 
  9. information about distance, 
  10. not merely upon what we may 
  11. think an objectΓÇÖs distance is. If 
  12. HelmholtzΓÇÖs theory is correct, 
  13. certain illusions should occur 
  14. when the ordinary relation of 
  15. size to distance does not hold. 
  16. The perceived size of an 
  17. afterimage and the perceived 
  18. size of the elevated moon 
  19. relative to that of the moon on 
  20. the horizon are cases in point.
  21.
