This kind of computational process, suggested by Helmholtz
as an explanation of constancy,
is beyond conscious knowledge
or control and occurs very
quickly. Helmholtz referred to
it as unconscious inference. It
depends upon sensory
information about distance,
not merely upon what we may
think an objectΓÇÖs distance is. If
HelmholtzΓÇÖs theory is correct,
certain illusions should occur
when the ordinary relation of
size to distance does not hold.
The perceived size of an
afterimage and the perceived
size of the elevated moon
relative to that of the moon on
the horizon are cases in point.
